Skokloster Castle

Skokloster Slott fl [map] (May Sat–Sun 11am–4pm, June–Aug daily 11am–5pm, Sept Sat–Sun 11am–4pm, with exceptions; guided tours in English June–Aug 12.15pm, 2pm; http://skoklostersslott.se) is a magnificent baroque palace on the edge of a lovely bay on Lake Mälaren, about 20km (12 miles) northeast of Sigtuna. It was constructed in the latter part of the 17th century by Carl Gustaf Wrangel, a field marshal under Gustavus Adolphus in the Thirty Years’ War. The castle’s 100 oversized rooms house a fabulous collection of historical treasures, mostly from the 17th century when Sweden was Europe’s pre-eminent military power. The collection includes silver and glass pieces, tapestries, baroque furniture, over 1,000 paintings and 20,000 rare books and manuscripts, much of it war booty. The arms collection, one of the largest in the world, begins with crossbows and includes such oddities as a set of executioner’s swords and a 2.5m (8ft) long rifle that belonged to Queen Kristina.
